CWG Garam masala
Before the beginning of CWG, the Canadian Newspaper 'National Post' tore India apart describing its Commonwealth Games preparations as ‘a bad joke’ on the world and said India was frittering away what could have been its ’showcase moment’.
‘Monsoon rains, a dengue fever epidemic, car bombs, a collapsing pedestrian bridge, corrupt construction rackets, traffic Armageddon, indifferent politicians and a filthy athletes’ village that does not even have proper plumbing yet. Or wiring. Or paint on the walls,’ the National Post wrote .
The paper said, India’s showcase moment is at hand. The entire world is watching. But what the entire world is seeing – at least so far – looks more like the travails of a First World wannabe nation still struggling with its lingering Third World problems.” But amid all this, the paper said, ‘the good news is, the Indians don’t seem to be too worried.
Anyways, media can't be blamed for the damage done to India's image. The Delhi Government, Government of India and the Sports Ministry should be blamed for their irresponsibility in handling the preparations. Kalmadi is the black sheep and this fact must have been known to Government of India long ago. When preparations for the games were criticised and the accusations were directed against India by the world, the point should be noted that Dr. Manmohan Singh, Ms. Sonia Gandhi and Ms. Shiela Dixit didn't mess it up further by playing blame game. The Prime minister waited for the CWG to conclude and ordered a probe against our famous Kalmadi. It is the failure of Goverment bodies who were involved in the CWG, the committee should target the government machineries as well and not Kalmadi alone. The enquiry is going to take its own time to submit the report and we Indians have "Short term memory loss" and the government will 'forgive and forget' !!!
CWG with last minute botch up has been a success to an extent. India conducted a near-perfect competition overcoming the hiccups of pre-opening glitches and Indians consoled themselves by saying "Aal izz well , Aal izz well".
As Cesare Pavese puts it :
" We do not remember days, we remember MOMENTS"
