When : The scientific secrets of perfect timing
The book 'When' is about timing the decisions. It discusses the vital
points to take important as well as mundane decisions of our life. Daniel explores
the timing of decisions in three parts. The part one describes the waves of the
day, being a lark, owl or a third bird, and the importance of taking breaks in
a day. In part two, he discusses the different mindsets behind the beginning,
mid-point and endings of everything. He suggests whether it is a project or life,
bad start can be overcome by starting again till the beginning is better. People
are prone to be tired in mid-points, and these midpoints in any session or life
illustrates the underlying behaviour of people. Endings are more important than
beginnings. People loving happy endings is overrated and sad endings too has
its own tenderness and significance. In part three, Daniel analysis the power
of synchronising with the others and asserts that it gives a sense of belonging
and purpose to an individual. He proclaims that nostalgia makes the present meaningful.
The humans are beyond tenses and connecting past with present makes the present
and future meaningful as it gives a better perspective of who we are and why we
are here.
The author has used lots of statistics to make his claim
which drags the book. At other points, he describes the ups and downs in a day
and how the timing influences the decision we take and the result we get. The
book is average in some parts but it does gives an interesting perspective
about timing.
